Lane Auto Body Techs - the early years

Steve Lane knew before he graduated high school that he wanted to own the premier "body shop" (that's what they were called then) in the Quad-Cities. He worked for a time with his uncle Pete in a small Silvis shop and established himself in the market.

As Steve was becoming established, he repaired a Nissan 280ZX that looked like it had been stepped on by Godzilla or some comparable super monster. Nice car, but it stood 18" high. (Perhaps we exaggerate a bit.) After completion of the repair, Steve took it to (the old) Prescon Motors to see if they wanted to buy it. It was standing tall. (Nostalgically, your humble webmaster sold Steve the parts he needed to repair the ZX way back in the late 70's.) Prescon declined purchase of the vehicle, but enlisted Steve's help on their used cars that required repair. Steve excelled and was soon invited to do warranty repairs on their Mercedes, Jaguar, and Nissan (Datsun) vehicles.

Quality Brings Growth

Volume increased. Lane Auto Body Techs relocated to Davenport and brought two acquaintances on board, Gary and Chuck. These were good years at Lane Auto Body Techs, located near the Iowa Machine Shed.

Randy, our newest technician, came on board to help. He has been with us for nearly 10 years.

The auto market began to change. The technology that made Steve the expert in European auto repair was ported over to Asian imports. Clearcoat finishes and construction techniques were widely adopted by quality Japanese vehicles; Lane Auto Body's focus began to include more Asian vehicles, and additional space was required.

A Big Step

The next move (1991) was to our present location at 53rd & Brady. At 8000 square feet of production space, it was an optimistic move. Currently we're fully using our current capacity and are planning remodeling and expansion to accommodate our ever-increasing volume.

About 3 years ago, Steve hired Bill for professional business management. The management task had become too large for one person to handle. Bill was really hired for just a 2-week gig, but he hasn't left yet. It turns out, he'll retire here; it's such a great place to work. Bill is the person you'll most often have contact with as we repair your vehicle.

So, where we're at now: we're 5 guys that will repair your car better than anyone else. We'd like you to consider us if you require collision repair.
